A few Saturdays ago I kissed the family good bye, jumped in the car and headed out to the beach for the day! I was pretty excited to be having a day out by myself but little did I know how much better it was going to get!

I was lucky enough to be invited along to join a fabulous group of women at the first Yoga and Surf Retreat run by Learn 2 Surf Waipu Cove.

Waipu Cove is about 40 minutes south of Whangarei and an hour and a half from Auckland on the stunning Bream Bay Coast. It has a legendary camping ground where I spent a bit of time when I was growing up but that is another story altogether.

We arrived to see yoga mats lying just metres from the beach. The weather gods had smiled and it was a beautiful Spring day, the sun sparkled on the water.

Our first session was Yin Yoga – a series of stretches in the sunshine.

Now I say stretches but anyone who has done Yin Yoga will know that this is not as easy as it sounds. Within the group there was a range of different levels – from those who practise regularly to yoga virgins.

Our experienced yogi was great at demonstrating and guiding us through each exercise. It was blissful morning soaking up the morning sun.

Surfing should be in my bones, my father at 67 still gets out on his board as often as he can but I couldn’t remember the last time I had had a go.

That was about to change!

Emma Harrington the director (and owner) of Learn 2 Surf had thought of everything from sun cream to surfboards. She handed us our wetsuits and it was time to get into the water. Though not before a safety rundown and a few pointers to get us started.

A couple of the women surfed or had a least tried before but I think I was probably not the only nervous one wondering what I had gotten myself into. That feeling did not last long.

The smiles on the faces said it all!

Two hours later and the instructors had to drag everyone out of the water. Emma said that is usually what happens with the kids and wasn’t expecting it at all from a group of women!

What an experience – I can say that I am well and truly hooked after one lesson and am already organising when I can go again next. One of the women in the group was going to get surf lessons for her family for Christmas.

Learn 2 Surf Waipu Cove (and Emma) put on the most fantastic day for us. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Welcoming, organised and on top of everything!

Keep an eye out for their next event or if you can’t wait that long get on their website and book yourself a lesson!

It was one of the best experiences I have had and I love the quote on the Learn 2 Surf Waipu Cove website, it couldn’t have summed up my day more perfectly!

Who’s up for giving it a go?
